Penn for Youth Debate (PFYD) is a non-profit student organization at the University of Pennsylvania that aims to promote debate in Philadelphia by providing volunteers to coach Public Forum Debate at public high schools and middle schools every week, organizing debate tournaments for Philadelphia students, partnering with the After School Activities Partnerships (ASAP) to run a Philadelphia-wide debate league and engage in community outreach events, and providing scholarships to high-achieving high school students.

PFYD currently partners with 20 schools and hosts three tournaments each year, all free of charge. In recent years, PFYD has coached students to elimination rounds at several national circuit tournaments and to the NCFL Grand National tournament two years in a row. PFYD has introduced debate to hundreds of students who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to participate in this educational activity. PFYD also awarded $1500 in college scholarships in 2015 to encourage students to pursue higher education.

Become a Volunteer

PFYD recruits members at the beginning of each semester. If you are interested in joining, please send an email to pennforyouthdebate@gmail.com expressing your interest.

PFYD volunteers coach at a public high school or middle school once a week for 1-2 hours. PFYD also hosts social events throughout the semester, including volunteer dinners, bowling, movies, and other events. Get involved in meaningful community service teaching debate and public speaking skills while also belonging to a family of volunteers! Look for us at the SAC Activities Fair at the beginning of each semester.
